Bart Dermaut is a physician-scientist and clinical geneticist with more than 20 years of experience in neurogenetic and neurodegenerative disorders. 
He obtained his MD degree at Ghent University in 1997 and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2002 in the lab of Prof. Christine Van Broeckhoven (VIB Antwerp). 
He did a 1.5-year postdoc under the supervision of Prof. Hugo Bellen (HHMI investigator) at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX). 
In August 2004, he moved back to Belgium and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the labs of Christine Van Broeckhoven and Patrick Callaerts (VIB Leuven). 
He also did a 2-year clinical neurology internship at the University Hospital Ghent. In 2011 he was appointed Associate Professor (Chair of Excellence) at Inserm/University of Lille 2 and set up a new Drosophila lab at the Pasteur Institute (Lille, France) to study the function of genes involved in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders in the department of Prof. Philippe Amouyel and Dr. Jean-Charles Lambert. 
In 2018 he moved back to Belgium and obtained an Odysseus type I grant and Full Professor position at Ghent University. 
As a clinical geneticist he is involved in the genetic counseling and diagnostic testing of adult patients and families with neurodegenerative/neurological disorders. He is also an active member of the Program for Undiagnosed Rare Disorders (UD-PrOZA), a team of physician-specialists at the University Hospital Ghent with an interest in solving undiagnosed rare disorders using NGS-based technologies. 
Since 2020, he is a teacher in the interuniversity master program for specialty training of physicians in clinical genetics and teaches neurogenetics in the master program biomedical sciences.
